In early years, teaching writing was all about little teacher instruction and no directional model. In his studies, Hillocks noted that "the teacher's role in the process model was to facilitate the writing process rather than to provide direct instruction." Today, most educators and researchers believe that the writing process includes a recursive approach as well as strategies to target specific areas in writing such as revising and editing. The text also explains how the writing process doesn't necessarily need to be followed in one specific way. In my room I have a large pencil I made that is attached to the side of a rolling cart for all students to see while they are writing. On the pencil I have listed from top to bottom the process we take each piece of writing through.
1. Prewriting/Graphic Organizer 2. Rough Draft 3. revising/editing 4. Conference with a Teacher 5. Final Draft 6. Publish
The text explains that yes, having a routine process is good, but students may need to go back and repeat steps again before continuing. I think it's important that I begin explaining that now. Overall, as a first grade teacher I think the use of implementing the writing process, as well as creativity and strategies for writing, is very beneficial to my students.
